neorion syros shipyards
The Cyclades Κυκλάδες, are a Greek island group in the Aegean sea, south-east of the mainland of Greece; and an administrative prefecture of Greece. Syros,is the chief town, with Ermoupolis is its administrative center. They are one of the island groups which constitute the Aegean archipelago. "Neorion" (an Ancient word indicating a port facility for ship repair and construction), roots back to a traditional shipyard on that island, known for the construction of ships and boats for use during the Greek revolution of the 1820s, as well as design and building of "modern battleships" for the new Greek kingdom in the decades that followed. The company that survives to date, is one of the few remaining corporations in that picturesque and nostalgic island town, that was legally founded in 1861, and today is responsible of building some of the largest steamships in the world. What transfixed my eye into creating this photo composition, that later became a book is the fact, that the whole island's characteristic, is lacking in balance and symmetry, and in proportion with that of' "Neorion's Ship Yards" given space. The fire and steel, the smoke, the smell, the towering cranes, the large equipment, the accouterments, material, machinery, and the gear all moving-along precisely in the hands of sweating men was what transfixed my eye into this small corner of the world.
